Renting a car in Greece: how to pay tolls, what the airport costs, and the lanes to avoid
You do not need a tag, a sticker, or an account to drive on Greek motorways. Every plaza takes cash and bank cards, the airport motorway charges one flat fee, and the only real trap is steering into a transponder-only lane. This guide collects what the operators themselves publish for pay-as-you-go drivers.
GreeceTolls is an independent estimator and is not a rental company or a toll operator. The rules below are the operators' own published statements as read on 3 September 2026. Rental agencies set their own policies on transponders and fines; ask at the desk.

Pay as you go at every plaza
Greek tolls are collected at plazas, and every operator keeps staffed lanes that accept cash and debit or credit cards. Attiki Odos accepts cash and bank cards at collector lanes but not Diners or American Express. Nea Odos and Kentriki Odos offer cash or card at staffed lanes and automatic machines that take cash or card. Aegean Motorway publishes one price for all methods. Olympia Odos accepts cash and contactless cards at its automatic machines, but note that it has no collectors at ramp stations or on the Patras–Pyrgos section, so there you pay at a machine or with a transponder.
Prices are per passage and fixed per plaza, and category 2 covers rental cars, vans, and campers up to 2.20 metres high on all the concessions except Attiki Odos and the Rio–Antirrio bridge, which have their own schemes. Our guide to how tolls work lists every operator's 2026 car price.
Athens airport to the city: one flat fee
Athens International Airport sits on Attiki Odos, the Elefsina–Stavros–Spata motorway. Attiki Odos charges a single flat toll at the entry station, the same at all 39 stations regardless of distance: €2.55 for a passenger car and €1.25 for a motorcycle in 2026. Driving from the airport into Athens by Attiki Odos is therefore one entry and one payment of €2.55. Leaving the city for the airport the same way costs the same. The old aodos.gr website still shows €2.80; the current price is on naodos.gr.
The lane that will not open
Electronic lanes are reserved for transponder holders. Nea Egnatia Odos spells out what happens if you enter one without a recognised tag: the light stays red, the barrier stays closed, and you are directed to a lane with a collector to pay with cash or card. Its rules for tag users, driving at no more than 20 km/h with a ten-metre gap, show how these lanes are designed. Attiki Odos adds that a car carrying roof loads that could change its category should not use the electronic lane but a lane with a toll collector. In a rental car with no tag, follow the signs for cash and card lanes and ignore the transponder symbols.
If a toll goes unpaid
Attiki Odos describes its procedure. A driver who does not pay is issued a Form of Non-Payment of Tolls, by Nea Attiki Odos S.A. since 6 October 2024, and settles it by bank deposit quoting the vehicle registration number or the statement number. The operator's page does not publish a surcharge amount. None of the other operators publishes a page on fines or on the treatment of foreign plates, so we do not quote figures. A rental company that receives a non-payment notice will typically pass it on with its own handling fee; that fee is set by the rental company, not by the operator.
Do you want a transponder anyway?
Every Greek tag works in every other network's electronic lanes at list price, and Nea Odos and Olympia Odos issue their devices free. But a tag is an account tied to a vehicle, and no operator publishes a statement that rental cars come with one, so whether your car has a tag, and who pays for what it records, is a question for the rental desk. For a one- or two-week trip the difference is convenience, not price: Aegean Motorway states that its prices are identical for transponder and cash users, and interoperable tags are charged without discounts.
The bridge and the ring roads
Two crossings are priced very differently from ordinary plazas. The Rio–Antirrio bridge between the Peloponnese and western Greece charges €15.90 per crossing for a car and €2.50 for a motorcycle in 2026, under a nine-category scheme in which a car with a trailer or caravan over two metres pays €24.70. Attiki Odos, by contrast, is €2.55 whether you drive two kilometres or the full ring. Our route pages for Rio to Antirrio and Athens Center to Athens Airport show both figures with their sources.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a transponder to drive a rental car in Greece?
No. Every operator accepts cash and bank cards at staffed lanes or machines, and prices are the same as for transponder users. Use the cash and card lanes, not the electronic ones.
How much is the toll from Athens airport to the city?
€2.55 for a car and €1.25 for a motorcycle, paid once at the Attiki Odos entry station. The fee is the same at every Attiki Odos station regardless of distance.
What happens if I drive into an electronic lane by mistake?
The barrier does not open. Nea Egnatia Odos states that the light stays red and you are directed to a lane with a collector to pay by cash or card.
How much is the Rio–Antirrio bridge?
€15.90 per crossing for a car and €2.50 for a motorcycle in 2026. A car with a trailer or caravan over two metres high pays €24.70.
Greek motorways charge a fixed fee at each toll plaza, set by nine concessionaires under CPI-indexed contracts. Every operator, route, 2026 car price, vehicle category, payment method, and the one-tag-everywhere rule, from the operators' own price pages.
